At 1250 meters above sea level, the Sironko coffee washing station is uniquely located to receive arrivals from higher altitude farms, up to 1850 meters, along the slopes of Mount Elgon.
Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano on the border with Kenya and is believed to be the oldest volcanoon the African continent. Its massive base and gentle slopes support thousands of smallholder farmers, with Arabica coffee grown in a vast swath around the mountain, between 1,200 and 2,200 meters above sea level.
Volcanic soils, abundant rainfall, high altitude, and abundant sunlight are all factors that contribute to the Mount Elgon region's excellent terroir and subsequent exceptional cup quality.
The story goes that during a famine centuries ago, the tribes moved east and came across a river that proved to be their salvation. They named it "Sironko," meaning "solace" and "tranquility" in the Lumasaba language, spoken by the local people on the slopes of Mount Elgon. Our washing plant is located in Budadiri Subcounty, near the famous river, and processes coffee cherries from neighboring communities, still sustained by this abundant water source.
We provide training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to partner farmers to help improve quality, productivity, and yield, as well as agricultural inputs and seedlings. Our Sironko team also manages women and youth empowerment programs, organizing workshops that address attitude change toward resource ownership, acquisition, and family participation, as well as the creation of savings and loan groups to encourage long-term economic stability in the community.
