COSTA RICA

In the heart of the Nicoya Peninsula, where the dry tropical climate shapes and challenges each harvest, grows the coffee of COOPEPILANGOSTA, a cooperative with over six decades of history.

Founded 63 years ago by 23 visionary producers, this coffee community has worked passionately to ensure dignified employment, rural development, and high-quality coffee for international markets.

Four generations have continued this legacy, passing down knowledge, values, and a deep connection to the land.

The farms, which range from 3 to 5 hectares and are located between 800 and 1100 meters above sea level, cultivate varieties well-adapted to the environment, such as Costa Rica 95, Obatá, and Catiguá MG2.

With an average of 10,000 to 15,000 plants per farm, annual productivity can reach up to 100 fanegas. But beyond volume, the focus is on quality: the cooperative works with washed, honey, natural, and fermented processes, all carried out in a more artisanal than industrial way, requiring meticulous care at each stage.

Their commitment to sustainability is clear. COOPEPILANGOSTA is part of Costa Rica's pioneering NAMA Café program, which monitors and reduces greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of green coffee produced.

They also implement traceability practices to ensure low-emission coffee, a growing value among conscious buyers.

The cooperative provides constant technical support to producers through workshops and innovation projects focused on climate adaptation.

Seeing their coffee enjoyed abroad is a deeply gratifying experience for these families, who continue to face challenges such as crop diseases and irregular flowering.

Their greatest motivation remains: to preserve coffee culture, cultivate the land with respect, and ensure that every cup shared around the world brings with it a story of tradition, craftsmanship, and a firm commitment to a sustainable future.

Costa Rica

Of all tropical countries, Costa Rica is probably the most environmentally conscious. Over 25% of the country's land is protected in national parks, while 5% of the world's biodiversity is found in this small country.

In addition to this impressive progress in nature conservation, Costa Rica has also established a reputation for stable economic growth.

The first coffee production in Costa Rica dates back to the late 18th century. The government created great incentives for coffee cultivation, offering cultivated land free of charge to growers after five years of coffee cultivation.

Coffee became the most important export product and was a substantial part of the country's economic growth.

However, until the mid-1990s, coffee production also cast a shadow over Costa Rica: the water used for bean fermentation left the washing stations unfiltered and deforestation had reached a critical level. It was in 1995 that the government intervened once again and brought about a radical change by creating strict environmental laws for coffee production.

Currently, Costa Rica has a reputation for having some of the highest production and quality standards. This includes not only high quality standards regarding coffee cups, but also social well-being and environmentally friendly processing technologies in production.

Costa Rican coffees tend to have a medium body, and are a well-balanced surprise with a fresh and sweet acidity.
