COSTA RICA
Of all the tropical countries, Costa Rica is probably the most environmentally conscious. More than 25% of the country's land is protected in national parks, while 5% of the world's biodiversity is found in this small country.
In addition to this impressive progress in nature conservation, Costa Rica has also established a reputation for steady economic growth.
The first coffee production in Costa Rica dates back to the late 18th century. The government created major incentives for coffee cultivation by offering free cultivated land to producers after five years of coffee cultivation.
Coffee became the most important export product and was a substantial part of the country's economic growth.
However, until the mid-1990s, coffee production also cast a shadow over Costa Rica: the water used to ferment the beans came out of the washing stations without filtration and deforestation had reached a critical level. It was in 1995 that the government intervened once again and brought about a radical change by creating strict environmental laws for coffee production.
Today, Costa Rica has a reputation for having some of the highest standards of production and quality. This includes not only high quality standards when it comes to the coffee cup, but also social welfare and environmentally friendly processing technologies in production.
Costa Rican coffees tend to be medium-bodied, a well-balanced surprise with a fresh, sweet acidity .
