While coffee became the agricultural export base in the 1990s (despite very low market prices), its production, along with the national economy at large, was devastated by the genocide in 1994. Nearly a million people were killed. in the national tragedy, which has stalled development and slowed progress for nearly a decade. Targeted programs initiated by the government in the early 2000s encouraged Rwandans to use specialty coffee as one of the means to recover and create a new agricultural market niche.

The construction of the first washing station with USAID support in 2004, and the country was the first to host a Cup of Excellence auction, bringing international recognition to the "Land of a Thousand Hills" as a potential producer of exceptional quality .

Today, this small country (about the size of Maryland) contributes less than 0.2% of the global coffee supply , but its reputation for special quality and unique characteristics - not to mention the incredible history of its development as a specialty coffee since the genocide - has earned Rwanda a significant place at the table among African origins .

An interesting facet to the coffee here is that the native bees that live in and around the Nyungwe forest where the coffee is grown are said to be responsible in part for the " unique profile " this coffee has. Bee-assisted pollination, fertile soil (black humus and sandy soil) and cool climate affected by the lake thanks to the area's proximity to Lake Kivu all contribute to the flavors found in the calyx. Farmers do not use synthetic inputs either as fertilizer or as pest control.

Tega & Tula Specialty Coffee Farm, founded in 2000 by Ahadu Woubhset. Tega & Tula are actually two adjacent farms, named after the two nearby villages of Tega and Tula found in the Woreda neighborhood, or district, of Gibo in Kaffa, Ethiopia. The total area of the farm is 500 hectares in size, with almost 400 hectares planted with coffee.

The farm is certified organic and produces washed and natural coffees, and has not only a wonderful flavor profile , but also full traceability back to the producer — and nowadays down to the "block", or sublot. Ahadu is an entrepreneur who was a founding member of the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange executive team, who left ECX and decided to invest in a farm to produce specialty coffee. He found the perfect spot in the famous Kaffa Zone, which is considered the absolute birthplace of Arabica coffee , and decided to start an operation that aimed to preserve the natural beauty of the area, support the local community, and, of course, produce fantastic coffees.

This particular block is called Dosha, and it is a sublot of 46.38 hectares located on the Tula farm. This block is where the farm's " Mother Tree " is planted, the oldest tree on earth. It is from the area where the first Arabica coffee was discovered in Kaffa. It was planted between 2002 and 2003 and has 74110, 74112 and bunawashi) coffee varieties.

Teodoro Mulatillo grows coffee on about 5.5 hectares of his farmland, and has a mixture of varieties planted. Their coffees are picked ripe and pulped the same or the next day, then fermented for 20 to 30 hours before being washed three times. It takes about 30 days to dry the beans in raised beds under a shade cover.

As of the 2010s, Peru is a leading producer of Arabica coffee , often ranked fifth in world Arabica production and export. The remoteness of coffee farms and the incredibly small size of the average farm prevented much of the differentiation of a single farm that allowed the development and marketing of microlots in other growing regions, but as with everything else in specialty coffee, this is also changing rapidly. The country's lush highlands and good heritage varieties offer the potential for producers to overcome the obstacles of limited infrastructure and market access, and as production increases.
