BURUNDI
Many trees in Burundi are of the Red Bourbon variety. Due to the shrinking size of coffee plantations, rootstock aging is a very big problem in Burundi. Many farmers have trees that are over 50 years old, but with small plots to cultivate, it is difficult to justify taking trees out of production during the 3-4 years it will take new plantations to start producing. At the wash station, farmers can also obtain organic fertilizers derived from composted coffee pulp.
Despite the ubiquity of Burundi's coffee culture, each small coffee producer has a relatively small harvest. The average smallholder has approximately 250 trees, usually in their backyards. Each tree produces an average of 1.5 kilos of cherries, so the average producer sells around 200-300 kilos of cherries annually.
